White House Requests $4 Billion in Additional Funding for FEMA After Recent Disasters

Posted on September 1, 2023

White House Requests Additional Funding for FEMA

Overview

The White House is seeking an extra $4 billion from Congress to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This request comes as FEMA’s funding has dwindled to $3.4 billion after a series of major disasters. It follows a previous request for $12 billion towards FEMA’s disaster relief fund and is part of an overall $40 billion stopgap funding request. The additional funds are necessary due to recent fires in Hawaii and Louisiana, as well as flooding in Florida caused by Hurricane Idalia and Vermont.

Concerns and Priorities

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell warned that the disaster relief fund would be depleted by early September if not replenished. In light of this, FEMA is prioritizing immediate assistance for individuals affected by the Maui fires, Hurricane Idalia, and upcoming disasters. Consequently, recovery efforts for past disasters are currently on hold. Criswell emphasized that while immediate needs funding is crucial for ongoing disaster response, it is not a permanent solution. Criswell urged Congress to collaborate with FEMA on the administration’s supplemental funding request.

President Biden’s Support

President Joe Biden recently visited FEMA headquarters and expressed gratitude to the personnel for their work. He assured Americans that the federal government would support them throughout the recovery process. Biden called on Congress to swiftly approve the necessary funds for FEMA to address both immediate crises and long-term commitments, particularly in Maui and other affected areas. Although Congress is currently on August recess, the Senate will reconvene next week, with the House returning the following week. Biden emphasized the urgency of approving the FEMA request in September.

Upcoming Visit to Florida

President Biden plans to travel to Florida on Saturday to assess the extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.
