Liverpool’s wait for a Premier League win on the road this season is now over after the Reds finally beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Sunday. Despite away wins away at Rangers and Ajax in the UEFA Champions League, Jurgen Klopp’s men needed until now to register three points away from Anfield in the league with Mo Salah securing them with a brace.
The Egyptian struck twice in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to help Liverpool rebuild their hopes of competing for a place in the top four after a stop-start opening half of the campaign which might have just turned the corner after a win over Napoli in Europe. This victory also ended a run of two straight Premier League defeats after losses to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United undid an impressive win over Manchester City.
Salah swept home from a Darwin Nunez assist after just 11 minutes before he was gifted a second by Eric Dier’s poor header backwards five minutes before half time. Ivan Perisic did hit the woodwork once in each half, but it took until the 70th minute for Spurs to make the breakthrough as Harry Kane was teed up by the returning Dejan Kulusevski.
Antonio Conte’s men were unable to complete their comeback, though, and were without Son Heung Min after his facial injury midweek in the dramatic late win away at Olympique de Marseille in the Champions League. The result leaves Spurs in the top four but one point behind Newcastle United and three points ahead of Manchester United having played a game more.
Liverpool are now up to eighth and within four points of Europe after United went down 3-1 to Aston Villa on Unai Emery’s Villa Park debut, but there is some way to go until they are well and truly back in the top four reckoning.
Here are three takeaways:
Spurs’ sticky spell
Since their defeat to United, it has been a tricky time for Tottenham with the Newcastle defeat, a draw with Sporting CP which led to a labored qualification from a straightforward Champions League group, and now this. On the face of it, fourth is not bad, especially with United losing to Villa, but Erik ten Hag’s men do have a game in hand and could tighten things up if they win it.
On the bright side, others are in worse shape with Chelsea and Liverpool themselves still adrift, but the top two of Arsenal and City are pulling away and Newcastle have now moved into the top three too. Conte picked up a booking which is in keeping with his recent frustration regarding his team’s inability to compete in the way that he wants them to, and the World Cup break could be a blessing in disguise if they can avoid slips in the EFL Cup away at Forest or against Leeds in the league.
Liverpool lift off?
Klopp’s men have been hot and cold all season, especially in the Premier League, so their first away win of the season in the league will do wonders for their confidence. There will also be a sense that the hardest part has been done in this last push before the World Cup break and that Derby County in the EFL Cup and struggling Southampton in the league should not cause any further problems.
The Reds have been their own worst enemies at times this term and recently threw away the hard work done in their impressive win over City with losses to Forest and Leeds. After the recent 2-0 win over Napoli and now this, there is some real momentum building which should be conducive to a constructive pause instead of one where Klopp takes an axe to his squad, or the club considers the German tactician’s position.
Kulusevski cameo
Spurs really missed Son here, but they can be grateful to have seen Kulusevski make an appearance for the first time since late September and bring some instant impact. The Sweden international provided an immediate assist for Kane to score which will hopefully lead to increased involvement before the World Cup break. It will not solve all of Tottenham’s issues but getting the 22-year-old back to performing regularly will help to make performances under Conte more imaginative.
European escape
Both sides await their Champions League Round of 16 fates on Monday and they are opposing sides of the draw. Although they will not draw each other just yet, who the pair get in Nyon could go a long way towards shaping their seasons. Spurs won their group to get a more favorable route on paper, yet Paris Saint-Germain dropped into second place at the last possible second and would not be a welcome adversary. Liverpool are in the runners-up pot along with PSG and will be one of the teams the group winners are desperate to avoid given their habit of turning up and delivering performances against their tougher opponents.
When is Champions League draw and how to watch?
Set your alarm clocks as bright and early Monday morning the matchups for the round of 16 will be set. The first leg of the round of 16 will kick off on Feb. 14 of 2023.
