‘Several injured’ after stabbing near Frankfurt Airport

Several people have reportedly been stabbed in a major German train station, before police opened fire on the attacker.

Social media posts claim there has been a “stabbing followed by a police shooting” at Gateway Gardens station near Frankfurt Airport.

While Frankfurt Police have confirmed they shot an attacker, and that he has been injured, they did not confirm what prompted the shooting. 

One image on Twitter shows what appears to be a paramedic entering a carriage, while another shows what appears to be a heavy police presence outside the station. Ambulances can also be seen outside. 

According to the station’s arrival and departure boards, trains have been cancelled for the next hour.

The station itself has been evacuated and authorities remain on the scene. One video shared online showed a substantial security presence outside, with several police vans. 

One witness to the scene said: “Several injured in the S8 at Gateway Gardens station – one person on the ground. Route now closed. Ambulance on site now.”

Another added that there had been “panic” at first, but that this had since died down. 

It is not yet clear how many were injured in the attack.

The knife attack comes just weeks after the country was rocked when two teenage girls were stabbed on their way to school in Illerkirchberg, southern Germany.

One of the girls, 14, was rushed to hospital but died shortly afterwards as a result of her injuries. 

Her 13-year-old friend also sustained serious injuries but was in stable condition.

The suspect, a 27-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker, was arrested at a nearby refugee shelter, where the knife used in the attack was also found.

Police said an investigation was ongoing and urged caution as the suspect’s motive and mental state were unknown.

Germany authorities also warned against spreading anti-refugee narratives on social media, stressing that the incident should not lead to general suspicion against foreigners, refugees or asylum seekers.
