AEW has reportedly added to its coaching staff internally.
A new report from Fightful Select reveals that tag team partners Luther and Serpentico (aka Chaos Project) have both been serving in a coaching role as of late. When Fightful learned that Luther helped produce a match for Friday’s AEW Rampage: Grand Slam, it was explained that he’s been working in a coaching capacity for “quite some time.”
Luther was sidelined with an injury in May and has not competed for AEW since losing a tag team match to Swerve in Our Glory on an episode of Dark. He has since returned to the ring this month on the independent scene.
As for Serpentico, he’s remained a fixture on Dark and Dark: Elevation while his Chaos Project tag team partner was away from the squared circle. Serpentico, also known as Jon Cruz, has worked over 100 AEW matches after first appearing in March 2020.
Luther and Serpentico join the likes of Jerry Lynn, Pat Buck, Dean Malenko, QT Marshall, Madison Rayne, and Ari Daivari as members of AEW’s coaching staff who help put together matches.
Serpentico and Luther previously told Chris Jericho about how their odd-ball pairing came together in AEW, with “evil” being a key component.
“I heard rumblings of ‘Hey, this might happen in the future but don’t get too excited, wrestling changes by the minute,’ Serpentico explained. “So, a few months ago they came up to me and they told us that they were putting us together in a match for Dark. And they wanted to see what we could do. So we brainstormed a few ideas, and that’s when the relationship of him [Luther] using me as a weapon came about.
“I’m usually the smallest guy in a match, right, so I’m not gonna lift anybody. But what if he can just toss me at people? That’s how it was born, just brainstorming ideas in the back,” Serpentico added. “Like if it works, it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. We just tried different things, we’d come up with stuff and try it out. They were talking about trying it out because he was ‘evil’ and I was ‘evil’.”
Jericho then recalled AEW President Tony Khan’s awareness of Serpentico and Luther’s connection as the reason why he kept them together as an on-screen duo.
”I remember what Tony was saying about putting you together in a match, and he just saw the connection between you two.”
