Man dies just weeks after girlfriend found hanged at Army barracks

A soldier has died less than a month after his girlfriend was found hanged at the Army barracks where she worked.

Sophie Madden, 23, was found dead at the Overhill Training Centre at St Martin’s Plain Camp, near Folkestone, on June 10.

Just weeks later on July 19, the body of Ross Burnside, aged in his 20s, was discovered in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, The Mirror reports.

The campaign group Veterans Against Suicide, has said the deaths were ‘preventable’ tragedies.

The couple met while serving together in 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

At the time of his death, Mr Burnside had moved on to work for the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

In a statement, the unit said he ‘will leave a legacy among those he inspired’.

A family member of Sophie’s has also paid tribute to Ross, saying: ‘Rest easy Ross you will forever be missed by everyone. I know you and Soph will be looking after each other.’

An inquest into Sophie’s death was previously held. Her death is not being treated as suspicious, according to Kent Police.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed an investigation has now been launched.

An Army spokesperson said: ‘It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Bombardier Ross Burnside.

‘Our thoughts are with Bdr Burnside’s family and friends at this sad time.’
