How to apply for a HELB Loan as a First Time Undergraduate Applicant

You can now easily apply for a Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) Loan as a First Time Undergraduate Applicant for the academic year 2022-2023.

High Education Loans Board (HELB) is the biggest financier for higher education in the country. It offers financing to students in Universities and TVET institutions.

To be eligible for an undergraduate loan you must be a student placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service [KUCCPS] in the local public and private universities or Self-Sponsored, Parallel and Module II Students studying for a Bachelor’s degree. Below is the application procedure.

HELB Loan Requirements

To make the application process easier you need to have the following documents at hand.

  • A copy of the Applicant’s National ID Card
  • Copies of the parents’ National ID Cards/death certificate where the parent is deceased
  • Copies of both guarantors’ National ID Card
  • A copy of the applicant’s admission letter and KCSE result slip/certificate
  • A copy of the applicant’s Bank ATM/Bank card (for Government-sponsored students only)
  • A copy of the applicant’s Smart Card from the institution
  • One recent coloured passport size photograph of the applicant.

How to Apply for the Loan

  • On your browser visit the HELB website to access the Student Portal and click on “create an account” to register.
  • Once the account is created, log in and select the appropriate Undergraduate First Time Loan Application Form.
  • Read the literature or view the videos on Financial Literacy and participate in the brief exercise online.
  • Access and fill out the loan application form accurately and submit it.
  • Print TWO copies of the duly filled Loan Application Form
  • Have the forms appropriately filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities.
  • Attach all the documents as per the checklist on the form and present one copy of the duly filled Loan Application Form at a Huduma Center near you or HELB Student Service Centre on Mezzanine 1, Anniversary Towers, University Way, Nairobi.
  • Retain a complete copy of the Loan Application Form.
  • Any other information in regard to your application status will be sent to the contact you provided during the application.

The maximum amount one can be awarded is Ksh 60000 and a minimum of Ksh 35000. For government-sponsored students, Ksh8000 is sent to the school directly for tuition fees and the rest to your bank account.

For self-sponsored students, all the amount awarded is sent to the school directly. Some individuals do not qualify for the loan but you can file for an appeal in case you feel that you were disqualified unfairly.
